PenPlusBytes is a registered company limited by guarantee since 18th July 2001. PenPlusBytes seeks to empower the media through the use of ICTs to advance the work of journalism. It consists of a network of media organizations and journalists interested in using ICTs effectively to advance the course of journalism. We have trained over 100 journalists from various parts of Africa and across the globe in cutting edge new media technologies and contemporary ICT issues. Knowledge Sharing Platform : PenPlusBytes operates one of the largest mailing lists of journalists interested in ICT issues. This mailing list is designed to serve as an online working space to promote the use of ICT in Journalism (ICT Assisted Journalism). Penplusbytes also produces the Bantaba Newsletter as a way of increasing awareness about ICTs among the media in Africa. Capacity Building : On 18th July 2002, PenPlusBytes working in partnership with the Ghana Institute of Information Technology (GIIT) and Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) organized the first ever national Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Seminar for sixty six (66) Journalists in Accra, Ghana. This pioneering effort led to the creation of awareness and increase in the quality and quantity of ICT stories in the Ghanaian media In 2006, PenPlusBytes pioneered the first ever online course on Introduction to ICT Journalism in Africa.
The AIJC was established in 2001 by Hon Kojo Yankah, former editor of Ghana’s widest circulation newspaper, the Daily Graphic, one-time director of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and former Member of Parliament and Minister of State. The Institute admitted its first batch of 60 students in October 2002 under a collaboration arrangement with the Ghana Institute of Journalism. It was officially accredited as a tertiary institution by the National Accreditation Board in March 2004. The Institute is partner organization of the Washington-based International Centre for Foreign Journalists. It enables the Centre to send Fellows on attachment to the Institute on periodic basis. Training: Print, radio, TV journalists and editors The African Institute of Journalism and Communications offers a diploma in journalism and communication studies. The Institute also offers shorter courses in journalism and has organised workshops on HIV/AIDS reporting. Thematic, editorial and technical training is provided.
